Global 5000 Damaged in Philippines Runway Excursion
A Bombardier Global 5000 carrying several senior members of the Philippines government was substantially damaged during a runway excursion at Tocloban Airport in south central Philippines on January 17. The crew aborted the takeoff roll for reasons as yet unknown and was unable to keep the aircraft on the hard surface of the airport’s 7,014-foot runway. The large-cabin twinjet departed the left side of the runway into wet, grassy terrain, collapsing the left main and nosewheel landing gear. None of the 15 people on board was injured. Witnesses reported hearing an explosion during the aircraft’s takeoff roll, possibly the sound of a tireburst, but those reports have not been confirmed officially. Local weather at the time of the accident was reported only as poor.

2 members of Illinois State’s athletics department among 7 killed in plane crash
The plane had been in contact with air traffic control in Peoria, which handles communication with airplanes after the Central Illinois Airport radio tower closes at 10 p.m., said Carl Olson, director of the airport.
At some point “that radio contact was lost.” Olson did not say if the pilot indicated experiencing any trouble. The pilot did not cancel the flight plan or make any alterations in flight, he said.
The airport control tower normally closes at night, but it is common for planes to land after that hour, with runway lights illuminated. Pilots also have the ability to remotely indicate they need the runway lights turned on.
The plane went down in a farm field about two miles east of the airport, north of two-lane Illinois Route 9 off a paved county road.
Fog still blanketed the area Tuesday afternoon, obscuring farmhouses, silos and the tops of the runway approach lights on a gray day with a gusty wind. A sheriff’s patrol car blocked off the road to the crash site about a half mile north of the highway, where investigators began to examine the wreckage.

starlight: Posting the links in the chat now you have made the thread is perhaps a mistake, I say this in all good faith and only because eventually the chat will be erased by new chat posts which, though slow, require space of their own. Best wishes for 2019!

starlight: post will result in slow page redraw, cumbersome. So don’t try to post Dana’s entire output retrospectively but stuff you have a comment on .... might be a good balance? It’s tricky! I have just one thread and go there to post my contribution over time.
