An easyJet flight was forced to make an emergency landing in Germany after smoke was reported in the cockpit, said passengers. The plane was diverted to Cologne Bonn Airport about 30 minutes after it departed London Gatwick Airport for Paphos, Cyprus. A passenger said people on board realised there was a problem when the senior flight attendant was called into the cockpit. The passenger said emergency procedures were employed thereafter and the Airbus A320 made a rapid descent from 33,000ft in about 15 minutes. The passenger said the plane was forced to land after the captain and co-pilot reported smoke in the cockpit.
At least one person has been killed after a jet crashed into a motorway in Germany [near Oldenburg]. It's understood the plane had just taken off from a nearby airfield when it got into difficulty at about 1.30pm.

A Southwest representative says a cockpit indicator light associated with the number 1 engine on Flight 4820 came on and the pilot decided to turn back and declare an emergency.

South Carolina Pilot Reported Mechanical Problem Before Crash
. . . the aircraft took off from Runway 11 of Columbia Metropolitan Airport at 9:20 a.m. on its way to Asheville, North Carolina. Shortly after takeoff, the pilot reported a mechanical problem, and the plane was on its way back to the airport when it went down.
One person died in a small plane crash in Northern Livermore while the pilot was coming in for a landing into the Livermore Municipal Airport. Fire crews put out a 2-3 acre grass fire that started due to the crash. The CHP confirmed there was one person found dead near the plane crash. Preliminary information from the FAA said the pilot of a single-engine Piper PA22 reported control problems shortly before trying to land at the airport around 9 p.m.

A commercial plane with 37 passengers and three crew members aboard was forced to make an emergency landing Sunday afternoon when smoke filled the cockpit and passenger cabin, authorities said. The plane was 10 miles out of Canandaigua when the pilot requested an emergency landing at Canandaigua Airport, 2480 Brickyard Road, where emergency crews from Canandaigua, Victor and East Bloomfield responded, with Canandaigua on the scene within three minutes of the call. No fire was found, said authorities.

Missing Plane With 8 From Cruise Ship Found on Side of Alaska Mountain
A plane carrying nine people, including several from a cruise ship, crashed on the side of a mountain in Alaska Thursday, officials said.
Rescuers discovered the wreck of the Promech Air float plane hours after it went missing Thursday afternoon about 300 miles south of Juneau.
Aboard the plane were eight people passengers on the MS Westerdam, a sightseeing ship visiting Ketchikan, according to Holland America Lines, which was operating the cruise.
There was also a pilot aboard the plane, a DeHavilland DHC-3 Otter, the AP said.
Their conditions were not known.
The plane had been on a shoreline excursion when it crashed about 20 miles northeast of Ketchikan, near Ella Lake, the lines said. According to the AP, the plane was discovered on the face of a granite cliff about 800 feet above the lake.

Dozens Killed as Indonesian Military Plane Crashes Into City
JAKARTA, Indonesia — An Indonesian military aircraft crashed into a neighborhood in the city of Medan on Tuesday, killing dozens of people, officials said.
...Indonesia has a troubled history of air safety, including several crashes in and around Medan. In 2005, a Boeing 737-200 operated by Mandala Airlines, a low-cost carrier, overran a runway during a failed takeoff there, killing 100 passengers and crew members and 49 people on the ground.
An Airbus A300 flown by Garuda Indonesia crashed on approach to Medan in 1997, killing 234 people. Miscommunication between the pilots and air traffic control and a thick haze caused by forest fires were blamed in that crash. In December, Indonesia AirAsia Flight 8501 crashed in the Java Sea on a flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore, killing all 162 passengers and crew members aboard.
In April, an F-16 fighter jet burst into flames on a runway at an air base in Jakarta, the capital. It was one of five F-16s that arrived from the United States last year. The Indonesian Air Force said at the time that it was grounding the four other jets while the cause of the accident was investigated....
