Dana just called me this afternoon, to let me know that he is now on the Queen Charlotte Islands (Haida Gwaii) and has no internet there.
He says the Islanders are all very well aware of the radiation from Fukushima, and have said to Dana that seeing him there, tells them something is up. They are all fully awake.
The Divers have told Dana already, that they have seen a very large amount of sea star legs on the ocean floor in a large area there.
He will be tagging with the Diver fleet througout his time on the Island, so he is among comrads, and the Islanders; I know, will embrace him while he is there.
He said that the Divers are now all opening up more to understanding that Fukushima is not under any sort of control, and they are now becoming more a part of this expedition; in that when they are out, they will be contacting Dana when they find something unusual so he can motor out and drop the camera to investigate.
Dana says that he is seeing a small amount of life on Haida Gwaii; more than he has seen in the last month or so around the smaller islands closer to the mainland, but still, it is not very much life, and no more species; still the same species he has been seeing throughout, so most species that should be there are gone, as we have been seeing since Dana began.
The Islanders have told Dana that the starlings have disappeared. So sad...
They used to be there in huge numbers; flock populations that you could never begin to count; Islanders have seen maybe 20 starlings over the last year.
Dana saw a seal the other day, in the water. He said there is no way anyone would ever be able to get very close to a seal. Dana says the seal looked sick and lethargic, and there were seagulls watching the seal like vultures; they know when something is dying... Dana felt sick at seeing the gulls waiting for it's death, so went to the seal, and shewed the gulls away from it. That poor seal was in such bad shape, it didn't even try to get away from Dana... So, so sad.
Things are a bit more expensive on the Island than the mainland; Dana just spent $500 to fuel up, (same amount of fuel on the mainland cost him $300) and food was $250. so both fuel and food are much more expensive there. He will need more donations to be able to keep going while he is there, so come on hounds, lets get to donating whatever amounts we can muster up to add up, to keep him going. All we have to do is keep the motor fed, and keep Dana and Zoie fed. This is a simple task that we can all put together to do.
Dana said hugs to all, and that he loves us all.
