First it is important to understand the difference between GMO, non-GMO, and Organic foods. GMO does not mean that the nutrients have been engineered out of them, although the result would be the same. The engineering of nutrients and minerals out of the food supply has happened through the industrialization and frankly criminalization of the agricultural industry (Monsanto). So even if you ate non-GMO potato chips (Kettle Chips brand) that does not mean that you are getting nutrient rich potatoes. The FDA definition of Organic is shaky at best, leaving the door open for GMO abuse.
Genetically modified and patented organic seeds have been engineered so that your body cannot absorb the nutrients and minerals in their plants and yields (fruits/vegetables). Basically, your body does not recognize the compounds in genetically modified foods, and doesn't know what to do with them. This leads to an almost non existent absorption rate of vital nutrients and minerals. A good example is wheat, likely all of the wheat on the planet is contaminated by GMO. This is why everyone cannot digest gluten, if wheat wasn't contaminated, most people would digest breads and pastas easily. There is a possibility that sprouted GMO foods like sprouted wheat bread can break themselves down to the point where your body can actually use it. Eating sprouted foods in the first place is so that the micro organisms that live in it break down the harder to digest by the human body compounds.
Non-GMO is always a good thing, but conventional farming in the US is deplorable, and you should know who is growing your food and if you trust that company. There are too many pesticides and dirty conditions and loopholes that are rampant though out the Agricultural Industrial Complex. If you want to avoid chemicals, avoid conventional mass farming by household names.
Organic is the way to go, usually you're gonna get better tasting more nutrient rich food. However there are loopholes, and the big industrial companies like Kraft, Nestle, Coca Cola, etc. all have a piece of the "Organic Market", these companies are not to be trusted, research what you eat. There is a term called "Organic Washing", which means if a non-Organic plant is raised Organic for 1-2 years it can be labelled "Organic". Usually you will find upon inspection that organic foods from you local supermarket are usually inferior to say the same foods Organic at your local farmer's market. Local is always better as it is grown on a much smaller and cleaner scale.
Finally, if you have any sort of situation where you can, grow your own organic food. Look into Aquaponics if you're serious about growing your own food supply, it can be done indoors and is low maintenance. Stay healthy Fukuhounds!
