That's what happened to me...
I went to a doctor back in 2000 with a ping-pong ball sized growth on my neck. At first they thought it was a cyst, and told me 'not to worry about it.' I had to insist that it be removed.
They wheeled me into the operating room, and knocked me out. Next thing I knew, I was coming out of the anesthesia and the doctor informed me I had thyroid cancer.
Later, after they removed my thyroid and other glands, I was given radioactive oblation twice in order to remove the stuff they couldn't get surgically.
The result of all this is that my metabolism is very low, I have very low energy, and developed major depression, all due to the lack of my thyroid.
I am about half the man I was before all this, with the promise that if I do live long enough, the doctors informed me that I will probably die of cancer, as it is in my bones.
