18 June (10:55am UY time) The Whole Enchilada so far with Monreal: My first email to Monreal: Have you done any recent presentations (2013-2014) on Fukushima? was just watching one of your 2011 presentations and it concerns me because there are now fission products evidenced. Cold shutdowns were not effective. ... Ben: Hi Pia, I am not the best-informed person on the current state of affairs but I recently spoke to Ken Buesseler, a chemist at Woods Hole, who is involved in ongoing monitoring (You can see his data at . I'm not sure what you mean by "cold shutdowns were not effective". The reactor is in a reasonably safe state (i.e., no longer a fire/meltdown/explosion threat); the main ongoing problem is TEPCO's ineptitude at storing the cooling water. The isotopes that are leaking now, 90Sr and 137Cs, are the same water-soluble ones that leaked in the early weeks and I don't think they provide any new worrisome information about the state of the reactor cores. The leaking isotopes are detectable in the bay just beyond the reactors but are not threatening humans. From a dosimetry point of view, the ongoing leak is peanuts compared with the releases during the first week or two of the meltdown. My 2011 talk was not meant to be "here is the status and future of the reactor"---the accident was still ongoing at that time and no one knew what the state was or would become. Rather it was "here is how to read and interpret whatever dosimetry numbers show up in the news", and that advice remains valid I think. I welcome you to read up on the current numbers and see if you're still concerned. (Tepco may or may not be lying about the leaks from their site to the ocean, but publicly-available maps of land contamination seem to be trustworthy.) I can only speak for myself, buy the radiation doses Ken Buesseler was measuring did not give me any new cause for worry---even the Japanese seafood industry seems on track to producing safe, low-radioactivity fish, including very close to the Sendai coast, even with the leaks. And of course the doses to people outside Japan have been, and will continue to be, vanishingly small---below the detection limits of most radiation detectors (including anything at UCSB). Hope this helps, -Ben ... Pia: wow, you are amazing. I've done quite a lot of research and I do not subscribe to one source of information - you really ought look outside your little box if you care about your reputation. ... Ben: In response let me re-quote a line you may have missed in my email. > My 2011 talk was not meant to be "here is the status and future of the reactor"---the accident was still ongoing at that time and no one knew what the state was or would become. Rather it was "here is how to read and interpret whatever dosimetry numbers show up in the news", and that advice remains valid I think. I welcome you to read up on the current numbers and see if you're still concerned. ... Pia: Yes, I saw that, but my question was about updated information and all you did was cite Buesseler. It's sad that you are at UCSB. That's where my pop got his PhD in Sociology (he later founded Project Censored while teaching at SSU) he was quite the researcher. If he were able I'm sure he'd have quite a lot to say about the socio-political-academic response to Fukushima. Go see my response to your reply at vimeo: I also recommend you do a search for Fukushima Fission during period of "anytime" - see all the citations you apparently have not consulted. Broaden your view, be better. And, expect some fallout. ... Ben: If what you were looking for was a catalogue of current radiation-monitoring datasets, I'm sorry, you asked the wrong person. ... Pia: no - I asked the right person - your 2011 videos are currently being re-posted by somebody and they are misleading in this time - if you are unable to produce accurate updates to your original statements on this greatly impacting situation you are not much of a researcher. You can't can not report just once on a long term, globally impacting issue. That is not good science.

From Ben in the night:
"> no - I asked the right person - your 2011 videos are currently being re-posted by somebody and they are misleading in this time - if you are unable to produce accurate updates to your original statements on this greatly impacting situation you are not much of a researcher.
Have you actually watched the lecture? It is mostly an extremely brief general introduction to reactors, radiation, and radiation health and safety. If there are errors in that discussion, please point them out to me.
I recall saying, and I hope it was clear, that the lecture would give you some tools for understanding whatever the headlines said was going on. That statement was accurate in 2011 and it's accurate in 2014.
If someone is reposting the video (which has been online since 2011) and misrepresenting it as *containing* predictions, inside information on the reactor state, etc., you are welcome to correct this misrepresentation, which you can do without my help.
> You can't can not report just once on a long term, globally impacting issue. That is not good science.
My lecture was not "reporting" (I'm not a reporter) and it was not "science" (I am not a radiation-safety or reactor-accident researcher), it was just education (I *am* a teacher). There was a one-time, very-urgent need for a radiation-safety *education* lecture in March 2011 and I stepped in while the need was so urgent. Since then the need has been filled better elsewhere by actual radiation-health professionals, with actual on-the-ground information. I am not aware of any notable contradictions between, e.g., the World Health Organization's 2013 health-risk report vs. my 2011 lecture, but if you find such a contradiction you should assume WHO is more nearly correct."
My reply:
"Thanks for more info, Ben, but again - my original question is about now v. then in the current context of the fact that melt throughs occurred and fission products are being detected - the corium is gone, some believe it went far through the air as evidenced in test results from Tokyo and beyond and that it also is drilling into the earth hence into the water table and ocean. WHO is being contested by Physicians for Social Responsibility and others for inaccuracies and incomplete research. If you want to stand by them, go ahead. If you will not approach the topic with an eye on current events and long term implications I am sorry for you as an academic.
Also, you stated that the reactor is stable - there are four heavily damaged reactors - if you have not seen the photos, I suggest you do. Your calm statements do not match the reality.
In twitter, if you search: cecalli_helper fukushima or with tepco or with sci or with law etc you will find many scientific and legal docs and articles on the condition of the reactors. The ice wall that the IAEA approved of is failing already. Fukushima will not stop and there are no solutions. Nuclear has failed once again. I do not understand how anyone can say otherwise.
Good luck to you. Please excuse any typos, on my cell phone now."
I wonder if he likes going round and round... avoiding the fact that his one time information ought have a follow up for the world to see....

ugh! Another one ... This stupid (new) happy whales story making the rounds this weekend is really bugging me! So I took the trouble to reply to this particular irritating story: A Whale of a Story: California Whale Population Rebounds Despite Boat Strikes.www.dumb-out.net/whale-story-california-whale-population-rebounds-despite-boat-strikes/5627This "science" story got magically picked up by all the "science" news websites and booted to the top of G00gle searches. "Boat Strikes"? Are they nuts? Here's my reply: So I check back a day later to see if my 'awaiting moderation' status changed and it was trashed. Another candidate for my barge full of people to send over Niagara Falls! xxx
