Have been reading up on this topic, and some things stand out in my mind.
Proverbs 22:4 - KJV
"By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and life.
Thorns and snares are in the way of the froward: he that doth keep his soul shall be far from them."
...
10 "Cast out the scorner, and contention shall go out; yea, strife and reproach shall cease."
Quote of bodiless: "To me it seems that a calm demeanor in response instead of diatribe is more effective, and perhaps (as in my case) it provides the curious a different perspective to pursue information. Having said this, I am not yet able to do this 100% of the time."
This approach works well against the "childish" troll, and to educate others.
They are easily led to logic traps. Surprisingly, they often take the bait and are easily made to look the fool they are. Sometimes, one can appeal to their conscience, but it seems one need publicly shame them first with their own sociopathy. It is especially shameful for one to be so disruptive in forums where people are obviously suffering, dying or have departed. For them it is necessary to maintain decorum. Humor is another tactic i like to employ when tactful.
Then there is the (mis)"educated" troll. For that, one must be prepared to confront them with their own evidence &/or lack thereof. Be prepared to research the topic in depth, and take time necessary to counter their own evidence with evidence you have uncovered from your own research and that learned with the help of peers. Include quotes &/or research from others in your group, properly referenced of course.
One must make the argument easy for others to follow. Remember this is as much about properly educating fellow readers as it is about jousting the troll.
For that type, it is often more time consuming than it is worth.
However; sometimes important information to be gleaned.
Generally though, it is most time efficient to simply hit <delete>.
Jeremiah 17:5 "Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD.
For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited."
Amos 8:11 "Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD"
Hey, remember, i'm no expert in this. Now that i have my sobriety back (a few years now) am assured they are in fact and soon in deed in for a rough ride.
Thanks for helping me through troll-jousting blues to all people that replied above!
